Why do epoxy floors peel, and will yours?

Almost every peeling floor comes from two things: skipping the diamond grind, or installing over concrete with moisture problems. We diamond-grind every slab, run a moisture test before coating, and install the floor the right way the first time.

Can you coat a floor that's already been painted or has old coating?

Usually yes, but it depends on what's down there. We grind off most old paint and coatings as part of prep. If the existing coating is still well-bonded, we can sometimes coat over it. We'll tell you straight during the estimate.

Do you work on basement floors, not just garages?

Yes, and basements are some of our best work. The one thing that decides a basement is moisture. A slab sitting against damp soil pushes water vapour up into the underside of any coating, and that pressure is what lifts a floor that was otherwise installed perfectly. So we moisture-test a basement slab before we choose the system, and if the reading comes back high we use a vapour barrier build rather than coating straight over it. That is why ours stay down.

Why Epoxy Floors Peel, and Why Yours Will Not

The two most common causes are skipping the diamond grind, and coating over concrete that has a moisture problem. Contamination the grinder never reached, a slab that is still too green, and hot-tire pickup on a thin or wrong topcoat account for most of the rest.

We diamond-grind every slab

Industrial planetary equipment opens the concrete profile so the coating bonds mechanically into the slab. Never acid etching.

We moisture-test before we coat

A moisture test runs before any coating goes down. If the numbers come back high, we change the system.

We put down two to three times the material

Our base coat goes down at 100 square feet per gallon. Thin installers spread the same gallon over 250 to 300 square feet — roughly a third of the film. Then flake is broadcast to rejection, about 40 pounds per 200 square feet, and sealed under a polyaspartic topcoat.

That is what separates floors that last from floors that fail.

Grinding takes a day and a crew. Three times the material costs three times the material. That is most of the difference between our quote and a cheaper one — and it is the reason we can put a real warranty on the bond - lifetime indoors, five years out instead of hoping it holds.

Lifetime Indoors, 5 Years Outdoors

Every indoor floor we install - flake, solid colour or metallic - carries a lifetime warranty against delamination. Outdoors, where sun, freeze-thaw and pool chemicals are a harder life, the same work is warranted for five years. Either way the prep and the material are the same, and that is why we can put a number on it at all: a slab ground to bare concrete and three times the base coat does not let go.
